4 Ways to Make Money as a Travel Writer

Posted by hanun on Oct-9-2009

Have you ever wanted to travel the world and make money for writing about what you see? It’s not as hard as you may imagine. Using a few underground techniques, you can be making a healthy income in no-time flat for writing about traveling the world!

Here are the ways you can make money as a travel writer:

1) Traditional Method: Selling Your Stories To Travel Magazines and Newspapers.

This is the most common and most well-known method. Ironically, it also pays the least of all the methods.

You can take two paths when selling your article to a magazine. First you can query a magazine on their interest about a particular subject. If interested, they will agree to buy your article if it meets their standards. The second method is to write the article, then try and sell it.

To find magazines and periodicals that purchase travel stories, go to the library and check out the most recent Writers Market and you’ll have over a dozen periodicals that pay anywhere from a few hundred bucks to a few thousand dollars for an article.

The risky side to this is that there are no guarantees of payment, and you must either have a great story or be a great writer to make this work. Not impossible, just tough.

2) Writing For Other People’s Blogs.

If you can write a 400-1500 word post on any given subject, you can sell the post to a blog at a set price. Heres why: Blogs constantly need new content. It’s how they stay fresh with their readers and how they stay well-ranked in the search engines.

However, writing a new post every few days is a difficult task! If you take over that task for a blog owner, you’re going to be saving them a TON of time and effort, providing their readers with great value, and making an income for a project that is relatively easy for you to complete.

You can get paid anywhere from 20 bucks to a few hundred dollars for this kind of writing… and it’s a LOT easier to do that writing for a magazine.

Think of it: You spend a day writing 5 articles and sell the articles for $30 dollars each. Now you’ve made $150 dollars for a couple of hours of work and everyone is happy.

3) Writing for Your Own Blog.

Another option is to write your own blog and use your travel stories to drive traffic to it. You’d be surprised at the number of bored, lifeless people who want to live vicariously through someone traveling the world. You can then monetize your blog by selling adspace or selling products related to your blog. This sounds basic, but it has made many-a-traveler tens and even 100’s of thousands of dollars per year.

4) Completing Writing Projects on ‘Project’ Sites.

There are literally hundreds of writing projects posted every single day on Elance, Guru, DoMyStuff, and other ‘project’ posting websites.

All you have to do is set up a free account as a content provider, then answer people’s requests for writing projects. Once you’re done, the funds will be electronically deposited into your bank account, and you can withdraw the money from any ATM in the world. You can then pick up another project… or complete several projects all at once!

Many projects go for $1000+ dollars, so it doesn’t take a lot of these to be able to travel well and travel often. You can even do the work on the airplane ride to your next destination!

If you have any writing skill at all, you will be able to pick one of these methods and become a well-paid traveler.

Do you want to be your own boss but do not have enough capital? Well you can do so now with less than $500 since there are YTB opportunities.

YTB stands for Your Travel Business. As a member, you have the opportunity to make money by selling travel or selling a travel agency.

There are two types of YTB opportunities. The first is by becoming an RTA or referring travel agent. After paying the one time start up fee of $449.95 and paying a monthly fee of $49.95 a month, you get to earn 60% of the package booked throuhg your website.

The second YTB opportunity occurs when you decide to become a marketing representative. As a rep, you don’t have to pay any fees or earn any sales commissions. The only way you will earn is through enrollments and sponsorships.

If you are one of those that want to make the most of out of your YTB opportunity, you can do both. If you are not sure how things will go, try it out as a rep first then become an RTA later on.

In 2007, the company earned $414 million and a majority of it came from RTAs. This means that there are more YTB opportunities by referring people to them than by being a rep.

For the amount that you pay in start up fees, you get an automated booking website, back office support from the company, online training, weekly conference calls, team support and coaching, bonuses and access to company sponsored special travel deals. That is not bad for the amount of money you invested which you will recoup in the next few months.

Unknown to many, YTB opportunities can also give you tax deductions by 20 to 30% because you are operating your own business. This is by far one of the most attrative aspects of owning your own home based business, the tax breaks. This also includes deductions in the equipment you use to run it including your computer, car and vacations. If you compare what you spend on a vacation as a regular employee compared to that of an entrepreneur, you get to save money because what you are spending is pre-tax and not after tax dollars.

Everyone has a dream of becoming their own boss so why wait when you can avail of YTB opportunities right now? All you have to do is go online, fill up the form and then a team leader will help guide you through the rest of the process.

There is no guarantee that YTB opportunities is your solution to financial freedom. Just like any business, it is a risk so you have to do your share by getting people to book through you so commissions will start pouring in.

Videoconferencing is a new technology that is quickly opening doors in the online world. International business is catching onto the trend and it is becoming more and more commonplace among both newly established not to mention, well-established businesses. Videoconferencing is well on its way to becoming more affordable for businesses with modest budgets. No longer is it the technology for the wealthy.

For example, in 2002 the price for videoconferencing equipment dropped a whopping eighty percent from its original price. Some international businesses have been quick to take advantage of videoconferencing whereas others, such as the architecture firms have been slow to do so. There is a tremendous potential for the growth of business on international levels and companies well aware of this fact are using it to their greatest advantage.

There are many opportunities available to make use of videoconferencing technology and they require a low risk factor as well as a very small financial investment. There is a federal program known as the CS or Commercial Service of the United States Department of commerce (also called the U.S. Department of commerce Support) that makes every effort to support firms located in the United States (in particular companies that are medium to small in size) in order to encourage exports.

The U.S. Department of Commerce Support is a network known through out the world that has as its express purpose to do everything in its power to encourage the international business interests and to help them grow in every way possible. To describe its duties in a more complex way, The CS offers comprehensive, customized solutions to the international trade challenged of the U.S. companies and provides export promotion assistance through a variety of products and services.

To further its goals the CS makes use of videoconferencing as often as it is fitting to do so. They make it possible for a firm in the United States to directly communicate in real time with firms in other parts of the world.

Any number of aspects of international business can be discussed in these international videoconference sessions and members of a firm interested in feedback and ideas can visit many new perspectives from their colleagues across the globe. At the present time the CS can connect more than forty countries in the world via videoconferencing and their plans include expanding in the near future to include eighty countries.

Many things can be accomplished through a videoconference including the opportunity to learn as much as one can about foreign markets, to consider the challenges inherent in cutting edge technology and to meet colleagues and/or business partners in other countries to toss around a plethora of business plans and ideas.

Videoconferencing is a revolutionary concept that is changing the way international business is conducted. When videoconferencing is made use of on an otherwise regular basis, it saves both money and time for companies (or rather lots of time and lots of money!).

This time and the financial resources can be put to much better use in companies and less waste is always considered good business. As opposed to travel expenses, the money can be put towards research, marketing, promotional campaigns, imports, exports, the acquisition of new equipment and the development of new technologies.

Videoconferencing for international businesses is often done office to office across the globe by way of either satellite videoconferencing or ISDN videoconferencing. A satellite videoconference has much to offer.

First of all the production and distribution is on par with the exceptional quality of television and the communication between the offices all takes place in real time as there is no delays whatsoever in terms of audio or video. If two-way interaction involving smaller groups of people in a variety of locations around the world (or even in your city or state) is desired then your best bet is to go with ISDN videoconferencing. This type of videoconferencing has often been described as being an interactive meeting experience.

This form is very convenient as well as affordable and allows for multilocation communication by way of a connection that consists of a digital telephone. There is both clear and uninterrupted audio and video feed that is two-way and in real time and finally sharing documents with the individual or individuals on the other end of the communication is a snap because computer applications can easily be shown (such as a spreadsheet in Excel or a presentation done in PowerPoint).
